Draw My Life is a work-in-progress API and portal of drawings collected from art therapy sessions held in refugee camps. Krissy and her team created its prototype at the last EmpowerHack hackathon and have been volunteering their spare time since to progress it to the field, in hopes that providing this source of anonymised, qualitative data will help aid workers lobby local governments for children's mental health support programs.

She will walk you through the general Rails-based stack and challenges faced so far, including integrating the API with existing open resources (via the Humanitarian Data Exchange), handling efficient multi-image uploads (for busy aid workers), and other special considerations when building technology for users fleeing conflict.

This talk will provide a beginner-friendly introduction to data structures, algorithms, and how a basic understanding of these concepts will make you a better web developer. He'll go over various structures including arrays and linked lists, different types of algorithms, and real-world applications. The goal of this talk is to demystify some ideas that seem unapproachable for many beginning developers, and to shed some light on the inner workings of the languages that we know and love, such as Python, Ruby, and JavaScript.
