Agenda

Please join us for the July edition of codebar Monthlies!

We'll have food and drinks as you turn up. There are breaks between talks. We aim to finish around 20:30.

Long talks 🗣

Adiba Maduegbuna (she/her) : "Creating music through code, an introduction to Live Coding"

As we move towards a world influenced by technology, more and more people are interested in learning to code. Writing expressive code can be considered an art form. Therefore developers are artists who translate complex business requirements into code. Music is a global language with room for so much expression. So what if we wrote code that could actually generate music?

Well we can and there’s an active community of artists and aficionados participating in Live Coding globally through open source projects and music meetups. This talk will give insight into how music is created via code and how this can shape a future generation of coders.

Nathaniel Okenwa (he/him) : "Writing your first desktop App with Electron"

As a JavaScript developers, it is easy to think that your sphere of influence is limited to the web. Electron enables you to develop cross-platform desktop applications using the JavaScript you already know. In this talk, we will go through a quick walkthrough guide to creating your first desktop app.

Short talks ⚡️

Josh Fleck (he/him) : " Writing more elegant queries with ActiveRecord"

So often, the biggest bottleneck to scaling is the database. It's also one of the areas where a little engineering effort goes a long way. This talk exists because I think it is very rewarding to write queries with ActiveRecord that are easily readable and able to scale. We'll walk through some real world examples of refactoring some mingin' ActiveRecord queries, learn optimisation techniques you can put to work right away, and build a deeper knowledge of relational databases.

Who else will be there?
